Open house on Edens work:An open house is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10 to discuss resurfacing and rehabilitation of seven bridges this summer on the Edens Spur Tollway (I-94) between Lake-Cook Road and Dundee Road. Staff from the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority will be available to answer questions and discuss recommendations for noise abatement. Displays and planning documents will be set up for viewing. The open house will be at Cove School, 350 Lee Road, Northbrook. The work is scheduled to be complete by late fall, with one lane in both directions open during construction.Gurnee Mills expected to reopen:Gurnee Mills officials say they expect the megamall to open as usual at 10 a.m. today. Poor weather conditions led the mall to close early at 7 p.m. Tuesday, said spokesman Scott Dobroski. He said the mall wanted to ensure the safety of its tenants, employees and shoppers through the early closure.Grayslake Middle School helps Haiti:American Red Cross officials today planned to collect $1,000 for Haitian relief efforts raised by Grayslake Middle School teachers, other employees and students. Grayslake Middle School seventh-grade reading specialist Judy Spector said some of the cash came through a "Hats for Haiti" day last month. She said the pupils in grades six through eight were allowed to wear a hat to their classes in exchange for a minimum $1 donation to the Red Cross. She said many of the children contributed more than $1.Spanish-language TV stars coming:Stars of Telemundo's popular "Mas Sabe el Diablo" are scheduled to visit fans at Gurnee Mills from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14. The first 200 in line will get to meet, take pictures and receive autographs from the show's Gaby Espino, Jencarlos Canela and Miguel Varoni. Music and giveaways are supposed to be part of the festivities. Officials said the stars of "Mas Sabe el Diablo," or "The Devil Knows Best," are expected to arrive about 2 p.m. The Spanish-language telenova features lovers embroiled in intrigue, betrayal, vengeance and unbridled passion.Count Deer Park's birds:The village of Deer Park and Prairie Woods Audubon Society will host The Great Backyard Bird Count event as part of their Leave No Child Left Inside initiative. The free event is noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Vehe Farm, 23570 W. Cuba Road, Deer Park. Children of all ages are invited to bring their binoculars, count birds, learn about various bird species and sip hot chocolate. Dress for the weather.
