1 dead, 1 hurt after Metra train hits car in Des Plaines

A Mount Prospect woman is dead and another unidentified woman hospitalized in unknown condition Tuesday after a Union Pacific Northwest Line train struck their vehicle, which was on the railroad tracks, officials said.

Train number 657 and at least two other trains were delayed after the crash around 8:10 p.m. at River Road near the Des Plaines train station, Metra officials said.

Mary Cannon, 68, from the 1800 block of N. Aralio Dr. in Mount Prospect was killed in the accident.

She and the other woman were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge following the incident, Metra officials said.

Train 657, which left downtown at 7:30 p.m., was scheduled to arrive at Crystal Lake at 8:55 p.m. Outbound train 659 and inbound train 660 were also stopped because of the crash. Union Pacific Northwest Line train 659 accommodated passengers from the 657 train. Train number 660 picked up inbound passengers from Des Plaines and ran express to downtown; train 662 picked up Des Plaines passengers and ran local stops to downtown late Tuesday.

Police do not have any preliminary information on why the women were stopped on the train tracks in that area.
