Don't trade police for pothole-patching
I would like all of the Winfield village officials to know that I do not support any decision to disband our police force. In my opinion, it is illogical to use their salaries to resurface our streets. What do we want, safe streets or smooth streets?
According to the Jan. 27 Daily Herald, Village President Deborah Buritis"continues to insist that there's been no discussion of dismantling the Winfield Police Department." If so, then why have there been discussions between Buritis and Sheriff John Zaruba? Why did the Sheriff's Department conduct an analysis and provide the village officials with a report specifying the amount of money saved by using their services in place of that provided by our police force? Why waste the time?
With the state of our economy as bad as it is and with so many unemployed do we want to add to those statistics just so that we can have nice smooth streets? Do we want to loose our sense of well-being, just to avoid a few potholes?
