Hersey thrives at Streamwood's expense

After three games scoring 41 or less points, Hersey's girls basketball team found its offense again Wednesday night.

And, as has been the case most of the season, Megan Rogowski was a big part of those points.

The 5-foot-9 junior guard fired home a game-high 22 points with four 3-pointers as the Huskies advanced to their third tournament championship game of the season with a 73-41 victory over Streamwood.

Hersey, which won the Wheaton North Christmas tourney and was second in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic, finished 3-0 in its pool if the Season's End tourney.

The Huskies (19-7) will play for the title Monday night at Fenton against Oak Park.

"Megan was ill (missed a game) and hadn't been herself," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "She's back."

"Rogowski is the best 3-point shooter I've seen a long time," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "She really gets her shot off in a hurry. She's tough to defend."

Senior Maddie Swan added 10 points for the Huskies while Andrea Perkins and Brittany Pittas each added 9. Kathryn Korff and Maggie Hogen chipped in 6 apiece as 10 Huskies all made it into the scoring column.

"That's the best team we've faced all season," Rosner said "They are good offensively and defensively. It was a game early but then we just missed too many layups. It would have been a different game had we made some of those shots early, and we had some really good shots."

Junior Michelle Tomczak led the Sabres (8-16) with 13 points while freshman Jessica Cerda and junior Emma Schmidt each had 8.

After a 3-pointer by Cerda brought Streamwood to within 15-11 late in the first quarter, the Huskies went on a 22-6 run to close put the half.

"We definitely had a lot of motivation to win this game," Swan said. "And everyone off the bench (Jen Hall, Domenica Giancola, Stefanie Mueller, Maggie Hogen and Eileen Zydek all scored points) played real well."

Zydek was making her first appearance since undergoing surgery for a broken foot injury three weeks ago.

Point guard Julia Fredian, who Fendley said "got pretty bruised up" in the Prospect game Tuesday night, did not play.

"It was nice to get some good minutes for Eileen," the coach said. "And it was nice to give Julia the night off."

The Huskies offense sure didn't take the night off, enjoying its fourth-highest scoring game of the season.

"It was nice to our offense back," Fendley said.
