Elburn Lions: The Elburn Lions Club hosts bingo every Friday at the clubhouse, 500 Filmore St., Elburn. The doors open at 5 p.m. Early Bird Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m., with regular games beginning at 7 p.m. Twelve regular games are offered as well as three progressive and one split the pot raffles. Food and drink are available for purchase. Proceeds go toward Campaign SightFirst II, a worldwide Lions fundraising campaign to fight preventable and reversible blindness. American Legion Post 75: The Fox River-Geneva American Legion Post 75 will offer a "Friday Fish Fry" every week through April 2. A variety of seafood and chicken entrees with a wide selection of side dishes will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. at a cost of $7.50-$9 at the Legion Hall, 22 S. Second St., Geneva. Venture Crew 9911: Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 9911 and Charlestowne Mall will present its "Rail-Rama 2010" from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7 at Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles. Rail-Rama 2010 is an operating weekend of model trains from N gauge to the large scale Garden Railroading. The Scouts will participate in contests and having fun. Venture Crew 9911 was registered as a Railroading Venture Crew in 1985. It was the intent of the organizers and sponsor to establish an activity around railroading. They would teach the youth members how railroading changed the industry from the early 1850s to the present day. If you are interested in Model Railroading, Venture Crew 9911 is looking for youth, age 14 to 20. Each year, the crew participates in local train shows and Three Fires Council events. Regular scheduled meeting are held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Audubon Society: The Kane County Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society invites the public to these programs and activities.
On Saturday, Feb. 6, the monthly bird walk will be 8 a.m. at Nelson Lake in Dick Young Forest Preserve, on Nelson Lake Road about three-quarter mile south of Main Street in Batavia. While birding is the main objective, there are many other facets of nature to enjoy. Walk as little as you want or the entire loop around the lake. On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the monthly meeting will be at 7 p.m. at St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. The topic will be "Prairie Green", the Geneva Park District's newest acquisition, which has proved to harbor some very interesting and hard-to-find birds. Yellow-headed blackbirds and many other water and field birds were seen in 2009. The meeting also will include the latest bird sightings, the opportunity to chat with other good folks who are interested in nature, refreshments, and the raffle. On Saturday, Feb. 20, join the "Gull Frolic" at the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. The Illinois Ornithological Society, celebrating its ninth year, is sponsoring this event which includes food (including "Sea Gull Stew"), booths and a view of lots and lots of gulls, ducks, and other water fowl in the harbor. Sierra Club: Jack Darin, executive director of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, will be the featured speaker at the local club meeting on Monday, Feb 8. Darin will give a legislative update for the upcoming General Assembly sessions in Springfield. Geneva Rotary Club: The Rotary Club of Geneva is a service club whose members include business, professional and community leaders. It meets at 7 a.m. Tuesdays at Mill Race Inn in Geneva. They will put a rock that weighs about 30 pounds on the ice-covered pond near the Fox River at the Mill Race Inn sometime in mid-February. For $1, guess the day and time that it will fall back through the ice and you win half the pot. The "Rotary rock" is currently at the Citizen Kane restaurant, 330 W. North Aurora Mothers Club: The North Aurora Mothers Club will host its annual fundraiser - The North Aurora Winter Gala - from 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Fox Valley Country Club in North Aurora. It will include hors d'oeuvres, dinner buffet, open bar, raffles and silent auction, with entertainment provided by Music by Design and a special performance by Moves Dance Studio. In addition, there will be a pre-raffle before the gala; tickets are being sold now. The first prize is $1,000; tickets are $10 each and the winner does not need to be present at the gala. As the club's largest fundraising event, the proceeds from the Winter Gala will go toward supporting the community. Since its inception in 1997, the North Aurora Mothers Club has dispersed more than $150,000 toward programs benefiting local children and their families as well as the police department, fire department, library and community outreach programs. North Aurora Mothers Club is currently seeking contributions from individuals and business for the Winter Gala. Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club: Looking for a way to save money on your children's clothing this spring? Be sure to check out the Tri-Cities Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club spring resale on Saturday, March 13.
The resale features gently used spring clothing for boys and girls, from infant through preteen. Other gently used items for sale include shoes, holiday outfits, dress-up, toys, videos, outdoor equipment, bikes, strollers, baby furniture, maternity clothing, books and other items for babies or children. Beverages and home baked goods will be available for purchase at the sale as well. The resale is a great way to find bargains on gently used children's items and typically attracts hundreds of shoppers. It also provides a way for club members to sell some of the items their children no longer use or have outgrown.
The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 13 at Mooseheart Fieldhouse, located on Route 31 and Mooseheart Road between Batavia and North Aurora. Admission to the sale is $1 and items with yellow tickets will sell for half price from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Shoppers are encouraged to come early and bring laundry baskets for their shopping convenience. No backpacks, bags or closed containers are permitted at the sale.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale is given back to the club to cover club expenses and, in part, to support club events such as a breakfast with Santa and a summer picnic. Aurora Junior Woman's Club: The Aurora Junior Woman's Club, together with Aurora Children's Dental Service, is presenting their 51st musical production, "Sleeping Beauty," at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20 in the West Aurora High School auditorium, 1201 W. The Aurora Junior Woman's Club/Aurora Children's Dental Services is a nonprofit organization made up of women dedicated to serving the needs of Aurora's children for more than 50 years. Each year, they stage a play to entertain the families of the Fox Valley. The cost of the tickets is deliberately kept low so families that ware on a limited budget can experience the joy of seeing live performances. These plays are rewritten, edited, performed, directed and staged by the club members. The profits from the performances go directly back to the community in the form of dental work for children who otherwise would not be able to afford the care. It also funds donations to school theater programs, Make-A-Wish programs and other local charitable endeavors.
Geneva Garden Club: The Geneva Garden Club has announced that applications are now being taken for its annual scholarship of $2,000. Many deserving Geneva students have received the Geneva Garden Club scholarship to support their continuing education over the years. A qualified applicant must be a resident of Geneva ZIP code 60134 who is a graduating high school senior or current college student intending to pursue an education in horticulture, landscaping, environmental sustainability or a closely related field. The immediate past recipient may reapply one time. The 2010 scholarship application is available online under the scholarship link at genevagardenclub.com. The completed application package is due on Monday, April 5.
