Mount Prospect school named Blue Ribbon winner

St. Raymond School in Mount Prospect celebrated being named by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2009 Blue Ribbon School in a ceremony last Tuesday evening.

Out of more than 132,000 schools nationwide, the school is one of 321 schools to win this award and one of only two Catholic schools in Illinois. The award was announced in mid-September, at which time, the school's 540 students from preschool through eighth grade celebrated with an ice cream social.

"We are really, really proud of the exemplary level of academic excellence, thanks to our incredibly devoted faculty and staff along with extremely devoted parent community that joins together to help students reach their greatest potential," Principal Dawn Kapka said then.

In November, administrators traveled to Washington, D.C., to accept the award.

Other Northwest suburban schools winning the award were Windsor Elementary School in Arlington Heights; Ira Rupley Elementary School in Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59; and Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove.
