Dold bus involved in crash, one hurt, candidate not aboard

A suburban congressional candidate's campaign bus was involved in an accident Friday night in Glenview, leaving the other driver critically injured.

Republican hopeful Robert Dold was not on the rented bus when it collided with a car at Willow and Landwehr roads shortly before 11 p.m. Dold is one of five GOP candidates for the 10th District seat in Tuesday's primary.

The bus driver, identified as 46-year-old Arthur B. Kelly, was the only occupant of the vehicle, police said. He was going to get gasoline at the time of the crash, Dold spokesman Kelley Folino said.

The bus was headed east on Willow when a westbound BMW turned onto Landwehr Road and into its path, Glenview police said.

The BMW driver, 56-year-old James B. Smith of Glenview, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. No information about Smith was available at the hospital.

Glenview police and a suburban major crash assistance team are investigating. Police did not say if anyone was ticketed.

Dold will face state Rep. Elizabeth Coulson, Dick Green, Arie Friedman and Paul Hamann in Tuesday's GOP primary. Three Democrats are running, too: Dan Seals, Julie Hamos and Elliot Richardson. The 10th District includes parts of Cook and Lake counties and much of the North Shore.
