Island Lake officer injured after squad car hit by truck
An Island Lake police officer was injured after his squad car was hit by a box truck Wednesday in Mundelein.
Sgt. Cameron Eugenis of the Mundelein Police Department said the squad was heading north on Route 83 and preparing to turn left onto Hawley Street when the accident happened at 11:34 a.m. Wednesday.
The box truck had the right of way, Eugenis said, and could not stop before hitting the squad.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
The unidentified officer was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with minor, non-life-threatening injuries, Eugenis said.
Island Lake Acting Chief Anthony Sciarrone said the officer received some cuts and bruises, but has been released from the hospital.
He added the car was a "court car," used by officers traveling to and from Mundelein branch court. The car was towed from the scene.
"It appears the car was totaled, and we will do whatever insurance wants to do," he said. "It will not affect the amount of squads we have on the street."
No one has been ticketed in the accident, Eugenis said. Mundelein Deputy Chief Michael O'Brien said the accident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
