Sword-wielding man fatally shot by Cook Co. cops

A 39-year-old man was shot and killed by police Sunday after charging Cook County Sheriff police deputies with a sword following an hourlong stand off in Glenview Township, officials said.

Arturas Kolgavas, of the 3200 block of West Parkway in unincorporated Glenview, was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, officials from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

He died at 9 p.m. following surgery for a gunshot wound to his chest, officials said.

Officials said police were called to the 12 Oaks Apartment Complex in unincorporated Cook County - outside Glenview - at about 4 p.m. regarding a domestic situation.

When police arrived, Kolgavas barricaded himself inside a second-floor apartment and threatened to hurt himself or police if anyone approached, officials said.

The building was evacuated and the department's hostage barricade team was called in to assist.

After more than an hour, Kolgavas came out brandishing a large sword and approached police in what police described as a threatening manner. He was shot once in the chest, officials said.

The shooting will be investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit, sheriff officials said.
