Hersey's Hoffman to set for Ashford

When Hersey's girls volleyball team won its sectional semifinal match over Mundelein in October at Stevenson High School, Huskies setter Joanna Hoffman was on fire.

"The Ashford University women's volleyball coach (Micah Cewe) was at our match that night," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "That was one of Joanna's best matches ever. He got a great look at her."

He'll get a lot more looks at Hoffman.

The 5-foot-8 senior has made a verbal commitment to the NAIA school in Clinton, Iowa.

"I'm really thrilled for Joanna," Lill said of the all-area player. "She's is getting full tuition and I think it's a great opportunity and excellent fit for her to continue volleyball as well as her education."

Hoffman helped Hersey to one of its finest seasons in school history.

She handed out 768 assists from 2,446 sets. She also provided the Huskies with a versatile attack that is rare in a setter. Hoffman produced 108 kills with a .366 hitting efficiency.

In addition, she led the Mid-Suburban League champs with 59 aces.

"JoAnna was at the center of our success," Lill said. "She was able to run our offense while at the same time keeping our opponents honest with her potent left-handed attack.

"Ashford is a great fit for her. It's a small school. I think she'll walk in and be able to make an impact right away. I'm thrilled she is continuing her career in college."
