Bears interview Chargers assistant head coach

San Diego Chargers assistant head coach/tight ends Rob Chudzinski, 41, was scheduled to arrive in Chicago on Wednesday night and interview for the Bears' offensive coordinator position today at Halas Hall.

Chudzinski is on the same staff in San Diego as Ron Rivera, Don Johnson and Steven Wilks, all of whom were fired or, in Rivera's case, not rehired by the Bears.

Chudzinski was the Browns' offensive coordinator in 2007-08. In his first season there, quarterback Derek Anderson, wide receiver Braylon Edwards and tight Kellen Winslow all had career years and went to the Pro Bowl. Edwards and Winslow combined for 162 receptions, 2,395 yards and 21 touchdowns. Anderson threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns under Chudzinski's direction. In the 2009 season, with Chudzinski in San Diego, Anderson had 3 TD passes and 10 interceptions for the Browns, and his passer rating was 42.1.

"He sticks out among all the names I've heard mentioned in connection with the Bears," an NFL source said of Chudzinski. "He's done an excellent job with Antonio Gates in San Diego."

Chudzinski called offensive plays in Cleveland and previously at the University of Miami. According to an ex-Bears offensive coach who is now with another organization, "Chud's got the experience calling plays. His name should come up (as a Bears candidate)."
