Lake in the Hills cops arrest two for pimping teenage girl

Lake in the Hills police Thursday morning arrested two residents on charges of selling a 14-year-old Kansas girl for sex.

Donald R. Jones, 52, and Antwanette R. Atkins, 42, both of the 3500 block of Sonoma Circle, were charged with involuntary servitude of a minor and juvenile pimping, police said.

Moreover, additional people may face charges in the case that is the first of its kind in the village, said James Wales, director of police and public safety.

"Unfortunately, I think it's one of those situations where the area has grown and we've seen the added evolution of the Internet," Wales said.

Police said the pair met the Wichita girl on the Internet and continued communicating with her via text message.

At one point in December, they drove out to Kansas and brought the girl back to work as a prostitute at their home.

She started working on New Year's Eve, Wales said.

The girl spent only a few days in Lake in the Hills, and Jones and Atkins sold her for sex to more than one person, police said.

"She had been staying at the house and we have reason to believe that the location was used at least to set up the situations," Wales said.

Wales would not say whether other prostitutes were working in the house.

Lake in the Hills Police launched an investigation soon after the Wichita Police Department contacted them on Jan. 8.

A Lake in the Hills detective went to Wichita to learn more about the case. Locally, police obtained a search warrant and went to the house on Thursday morning.

The girl has returned to Kansas where she is getting help, Wales said. He would not elaborate.

The pair, meanwhile, were taken to the McHenry County jail where they awaited a Friday morning bond hearing. If found guilty of the most serious charge - involuntary servitude of a minor - the pair could spend between six and 30 years in prison. Probation is not available.
