School electives should not be cut
An open letter to Elgin Area School District U-46:
I would normally not send an e-mail complaint to you but I have to say I am appalled at the idea that my children are attending a school district that cannot support two electives per year for these kids.
Times are hard enough without taking more and more away. Electives are the part of school that is fun and keeps their interest. These classes let these children explore career fields they would never get to explore if it were not for having access to them through the elective classes.
I am so disappointed in District U-46 that they would try to deprive the children of having these classes available to them.
I am sure that the district could make cuts in other areas, like cutting the clerical aides. They make copies and type tests for the teachers. The teachers are capable of doing this work; they do not need someone else to do it for them. And let's take a look at the Principal Breakfasts that you have regularly. I am sure that those should be cut before classes are cut.
I am not sure if you think parents just don't care but that is not the case; I care very much and so do a lot of other parents.
In closing I must say that for some students their electives are a part of who they are or what they want to be. I will go so far as to tell you that my own children were able to use their art classes as a type of therapy just to get them through a rough day.
If you are really in it for the students, like you say you are then you will not let this happen.
