Zion man denies Cary home invasion, armed robbery

A 25-year-old Zion man acharged with robbing two people at gunpoint inside a Cary apartment last year pleaded not guilty Thursday to three felony charges that could put him away for 30 years.

Quinton Brooks-Slovacek, of the 2500 block of Gilead Street, asked for a jury trial on two counts of armed robbery and a single count of home invasion filed in connection with the Sept. 29 holdup in the 200 block of North Second Street.

The charges allege Brooks-Slovacek carried a handgun into the residence, pointed it at one occupant and stole two mobile phones along with $7 cash.

Cary police said in September three men broke into the residence at about 11:20 p.m. through an unlocked patio door. The two other suspects remain at large.

The robbers. police said, appeared to be targeting that apartment and its residents.

"It wasn't a random thing," Deputy Police Chief Ed Synek said. "They weren't roaming the streets looking for people to rob."

All three charges against the Zion man are Class X felonies punishable by a mandatory six to 30 years in prison. Brooks-Slovacek, who is in custody at the McHenry County jail unable to post 10 percent of a $100,000 bond, is scheduled to return to court Feb. 4 for a pretrial status hearing.
