Bartlett rings up win over Woodstock

Long 3-pointers, midrange jumpers and layups.

You get the picture. Bartlett's boys basketball team can score from virtually anywhere on the floor.

Shooting a sizzling 56 percent from the field, Bartlett was able to cruise past Woodstock 73-44 in an opening round game of the Jacobs Holiday Classic.

"We were a little stagnant against Woodstock's zone in the first quarter and settled for 3-pointers," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "We got our transition game going in the second quarter and got some easy baskets. We call the first game of the tournament the lunch pail game. You clock in, go to work and clock out. I am glad it is over and we got the win."

Unable to penetrate the Blue Streaks' zone in the first quarter, Bartlett (6-3) was effective from beyond the arc, connecting on 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Luke Labedzki had two 3-pointers and Lance Whitaker, Larry Whitaker, Mike Banks and Matt Chaltlin had one each as Bartlett led 22-13 after one quarter of play.

The Hawks took control of the game during the early stages of the second quarter with an 8-0 run. Larry Whitaker and Banks scored 2 baskets each as Bartlett extended a 9-point lead to 17, 30-13, with 5:02 left before half.

Bartlett, which led 35-24, at halftime made sure there wouldn't be a Woodstock comeback with a 16-2 run to start the second half.

The Hawks, who forced 7 turnovers during the pivotal run, got 8 points from Labedzki and 4 from Larry Whitaker and led 51-26 with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

Bartlett, which held its biggest lead at 64-34 after a basket by David Greiter with 6:10 left in the game, made 8-of-16 from 3-point range.

The Hawks, who forced 32 Woodstock turnovers, were led by Labedzki with 15 points.

"We have a lot of weapons," said Labedzki. "We have slashers, outside shooters and guys who can get to the basket. I don't care how many points I get. I just want to win."

Labedzki was backed by Banks with 12 points, while Matt Neesan and Larry Whitaker netted 10 each.

Mike Sutter led Woodstock with 15 points while Jyron Aparri scored 12 and Colton Davis 10.
