Weekend flurries expected throughout suburbs
The weather this weekend may help put suburban residents in the holiday spirit.
Light flurries are expected throughout the suburban area, perhaps to encourage last-minute shoppers that Christmas is right around the corner.
The National Weather Service says snow showers will be mixed with moderate temperatures.
Today, with highs in the mid 30s, will be cloudy with a chance of a few flurries. More snow is expected tonight after the evening rush. Light accumulation of between 1 to 3 inches is expected, according to the Weather Service.
Saturday shoppers may have to dash light snowflakes as it will remain cloudy with a possible 1 to 2 inches of snow expected to fall. Temperatures will remain in the lower 30s.
Sunday will turn colder with highs in the upper 20s and a 30 percent chance of snow in the afternoon, mainly in the far north suburbs, the Weather Service reports.
Travelers flying to the East Coast are advised to check with their airlines before leaving for the airport Saturday. An expected winter storm has caused cancellations, United Airlines officials said. United also anticipates delays to flights heading to Washington, D.C.
