Inoperable grenade found on McHenry school bus
McHenry police are still trying to discover why an inoperable grenade was left on a school bus Tuesday afternoon.
McHenry police said through a news release they were called to South Street and Calista Drive about 4:15 p.m. after the hand grenade was discovered on the school bus.
Officers cordoned off the area, but were able to see the item was not a live grenade.
Police said the last student on the bus discovered the device on the floor near the rear of the bus and gave it to the driver. The driver put the device on the dashboard and evacuated the bus, then called police.
Police who responded said the grenade wasn't live or dangerous because the bottom of it had been drilled out.
Police and school officials still are investigating.
