Glenbard West continues to struggle

Glenbard West's struggles continued Tuesday night with a 53-35 loss to Proviso West in Glen Ellyn.

The Hilltoppers (8-4, 2-3 West Suburban Silver) have lost four of their last five games.

The Hilltoppers started well, taking a 14-12 after the first quarter. Cayla Herbst led the way with 8 points, going 4 of 4 from the floor.

In the second quarter, though, the game took a sudden turn. Chakese Williams took over, scoring 8 points to give Proviso West a nice cushion going into halftime up 25-18. The Panthers' defense held Glenbard West to just 4 points in the second quarter, and the Hilltoppers were never able to gain back the lost ground.

Proviso West outscored the Hilltoppers 28-17 in the final two quarters of the game. While Glenbard West did its best to try to make up the ground, however turnovers seemed to keep setting them back. Back-to-back turnovers late in the third quarter allowed for the Panthers to end the quarter on an 8-0 run.

Proviso West's guards were the big story in their victory. Celeste Jones, Ashley Segers and Williams all played major roles in the game.

"That's the key to our offense and being successful is that I have all my guards, not just the ones in double digits but that all my guards play," Panthers coach Kellee Robertson.

The Hilltoppers can find some bright spots in a tough conference loss. Junior center Cayla Herbst finished with 17 points to lead the way.

"Proviso took it to us today and they attacked the basket and it hurt us," Glenbard West coach Mike Hofland said. "We have a lot of things to work on."
