Vernon Hills Community Baseball and Softball Registration

Registration forms are being accepted for VHCYAA's baseball and softball programs. T-ball is open to boys and girls going into kindergarten and first grade in fall 2010. Baseball is open to boys going into grades 2 through 9 in fall 2010. Softball is open to girls going into grades 2 through 11 in fall 2010. No experience is necessary and all skill levels are welcome. All equipment, except for a glove and cleats, are provided. Most of the games and practices will be on local fields within Vernon Hills. Registration forms are due by Jan. 31. Participants are reminded that fees are increasing for 2010. Visit www.vhcyaa.org for information and a registration form.

Planning and zoning commission vacancy

Applications are sought for a commissioner to fill a vacancy on the Vernon Hills planning and zoning commission. Applicants should send a letter of interest along with a cover letter to Michael S. Allison, Village Manager, 290 Evergreen Drive, Vernon Hills, 60061. The committee meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays as necessary at village hall. The commission is comprised of seven members and serves as an advisory body to the village board. Duties include reviewing development projects for compliance to various zoning ordinance regulations and comprehensive plan, review of site and landscaping plans for new development, amendments to the village's zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan and special land use related studies as needed.

Grayslake North teachers raise $14,000

Grayslake North High School teachers Jill Tomasello and Jeff Schagrin helped generate more than $14,000 in donations toward breast cancer research through T-shirt sales and an October walk at Independence Grove in Libertyville Township. The cash raised went to the American Cancer Society's 2009 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Lake County event. Tomasello and Schagrin told Grayslake High School District 127 board members last week they had a goal to raise $10,000. The fundraising included a "pink out" for a Grayslake North home football game.

Dist. 73 volunteers needed

Hawthorn Elementary District 73 is looking for volunteers to help craft a common vision during a collaborative planning effort Feb. 25-27. Volunteers with a variety of expertise and experience will work together to create a common vision and actionable goals designed to strengthen District 73 schools and the community. Sixty to 80 volunteers are sought. Anyone interested should call the district office, (847) 990-4215 before Dec. 17. More information is available at www.hawthorn73.org.
