DuPage needs an active sheriff
We were surprised to see the radar trailer on Purnell Road one recent morning while returning from our Thanksgiving holiday. This is the first time seeing this despite the well-known speeding problem that Purnell has had for years.
Several of our neighbors have called the DuPage County sheriff because of high-speed drivers and have been told, "We don't have the manpower." Where are the 500 deputies that the current sheriff supposedly commands? What are they doing and what is so important that the concerns of the taxpayers cannot be addressed?
Purnell is a 40 mph township road that has become a high-speed shortcut between Route 59 and Winfield Road. This road is at times so dangerous because of motorists passing and their rate of speed that trying to exit one's driveway or from a side street becomes tenuous. Many accidents have occurred on this road with vehicles ending up in ditches.
Up until now these situations have been ignored. Could it be that the upcoming election with a more-than-qualified opponent for sheriff be the source of this newfound attention?
Thanks to candidate Mike Quiroz for stepping up to the plate, I along with others welcome a change. Maybe the election will bring to the citizens someone who gets out and about as an active sheriff instead of a desk-riding politician.
To our amazement in the Daily Herald was the disclosure of the theft of nearly $10,000 by a county deputy. Seems that this is another failure of the sitting sheriff to watch over the public interest.
It seems that these two basic issues may be only the tip of the iceberg. We need a sheriff that will be accountable to all of the taxpayers all of the time. It is broom time.
