Shop with a cop:

Round Lake Park police and Walmart are heading the 14th consecutive "Shop With a Cop" program Monday, Dec. 14, to benefit disadvantaged children. Officials said 114 area children will be brought on the Christmas shopping trip for toys, books and clothing at the Round Lake Beach Walmart. Round Lake Park police have been soliciting donations from employees and local businesses, but others may help as well. Donations may be sent to Round Lake Park Police Department Charitable Fund, 215 E. Main St., Round Lake Park, IL 60073. Police Chief George Filenko said the program provides the only source of holiday joy for some children. Filenko said about $5,000 has been contributed by police department employees and workers at the U.S. Postal Service facility in Round Lake Beach. He said about 500 children applied for the shopping excursion, but only 114 could be accommodated. Other area police departments, Lake County Crime Stoppers and the Lake County Sheriff's Office are assisting in the event.

Police said a resident in the 200 block of Southridge Drive was home about 11:30 a.m. and heard the doorbell ring a few times. He looked out an upstairs window and saw a man in a blue jacket walk away from the house and enter a gray Dodge Caliber. Cops said a short time later, the resident heard what sounded like glass breaking in the basement, then saw the man inside the house. Police said the resident yelled at the suspect, who left through the front door and fled south toward a park. The suspect was described as a Hispanic man, about 5 feet 9 inches, 160 to 170 pounds with short black hair, medium complexion and thin mustache.
