Prospect turns away Meadows with big finish

Sometimes the final score doesn't tell the whole story.

Friday night at the Jean Walker Field House, Prospect's girls basketball team defeated Rolling Meadows 42-27. However, the host Knights (9-0, 2-0) needed a big fourth quarter to do so.

A 17-2 run, sparked by senior Lexi Glennon's only bucket of the game, a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the third quarter, gave Prospect a 28-25 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Prospect junior point guard Sarah Winans (9 points, 1 3-pointer), who created offensively for her team all night, decided she needed to get in on the scoring.

"I try to draw defenders and look for the open kick," Winans said. "(In the fourth quarter) it was still close. I knew we needed to extend the lead and I took advantage of some nice screens by my teammates."

"We didn't come ready to play," said Prospect coach Martha Kelly, whose team comes right back for a 6 p.m. game at Maine South today. "They were quicker, smarter and moved the ball better than us."

Rolling Meadows head coach Todd Hatfield walked off the court disappointed but proud.

"There is a lot to build off of," he said. "We just ran out of ammo. They started making adjustments to what we were doing, and a 14-2 fourth quarter is not good no matter what the score is."

Senior Kelly Adair (6 points), junior Madelynn Conlin (9 points, 3 3-pointers) and sophomore Ann Marie Lynch (5 points, 5-6 free throws) did what they could to keep the Mustangs (4-4, 0-2) in the game.

"We came out and played hard," Conlin said. "We had a tough week of practice. We need to bring this same energy into our next game."

As for Prospect, its the Knights' third close game of the year and Kelly is proud of how her team has handled the pressure.

Junior Ashley Wabik (12 points, 2-2 free throws) knew it was going to be a tough game.

"We didn't play up to our level but we pulled it out," Wabik said. " We just need to stay calm and be more ready for the game. Not wait until the fourth quarter."
