Rosenberg steps up for Fremd

Charlie Rosenberg's monster second quarter helped lift Fremd over Barrington in the Mid-Suburban West.

The 6-foot-5 senior forward scored 15 of his game-high 27 points, grabbed 6 of his 10 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots in the second quarter as the Vikings defeated the Broncos 70-52.

It wasn't all Rosenberg, though, as the rest of the rugged Fremd front line stepped up after a challenge issued to them by coach Bob Widlowski.

Six-6 senior Nick Pflederer pitched in with 6 points and 10 rebounds while 6-4 senior Chris Klimek had 6 points and 8 boards as the Vikings (6-0, 2-0) shook off the loss of high-scoring point guard Zach Monaghan, out due to injury.

"With Zach out," said Rosenberg, "coach told us we'd all have to be ready to play."

Widlowski was more than pleased with the effort.

"I asked our inside guys to step up," said Widlowski, "and they all came through with big games."

Junior Greg Gerrard led a tough Barrington effort with 14 points.

"Clearly, they had an advantage inside, and they exploited that advantage," said Broncos (3-4, 1-1) coach Bryan Tucker.

"I thought we did some good things tonight. People are going to look at the final score and think that this wasn't a competitive game, but I thought it was very competitive."

After Rosenberg and Co. led Fremd to a double-digit lead, its guards took over in the fourth quarter.

Quinton Brown hit for 11 of his 17 points and Quinn Williams scored 9 of his 14 points in the fourth.

"In the locker room at halftime," said Rosenberg, "I told the guys that if it's not me, everybody else was going to have to come up big.

"Zach was out and we missed him - and when he comes back, we'll be even better."

Bryan Wegner had 10 points for Barrington while Riley O'Daniel, James Stack and Ben Bartz each scored 8.

"It wasn't our best effort tonight," said Tucker, "but we hung around for a long time against a very talented team."
