Glenbard West overcomes York

Glenbard West had a rough time with York's full-court pressure in Tuesday night's West Suburban Silver girls basketball game in Elmhurst.

But the Hilltoppers didn't wilt in the pressure-packed final two minutes when they lost a lead they held most of the way.

Senior Abbey White scored 6 of her 21 points in the final 1:27 as Glenbard West (8-1, 2-1) pulled out a 59-58 victory.

"It's something where you're upset about turning the ball over so many times," said Glenbard West coach Mike Hofland. "On the other hand you're pleased the team showed poise and was able to win a game like that on the road."

York (4-3, 0-2) took a 54-53 lead with 1:38 left on 2 free throws by Mary Colon. Glenbard West came right back in transition with Lexi Crovatto hitting White for a layup.

Meryl Cripe answered with a left-lane drive to give York its last lead at 56-55 with 1:07 left. White made 2 free throws with 53.5 seconds left and a layup with 20 seconds left after Bridget Flanagan forced a turnover.

York's Danielle Vujovic made both ends of a 1-and-1 to set the final score with 4.9 seconds left. But it committed a turnover on its final possession after Glenbard West missed 6 free throws in the final seven seconds.

Cayla Herbst also had 21 points for the Hilltoppers, and Evan Semmelhack scored 21 points and Colon 19 for York.

"They did a nice job of pressing us," Hofland said, "and we did a poor job of protecting the ball."
