The point of a designated driver is having someone sober drive

An Aurora man who was too drunk to drive let someone else have the keys, but that designated driver was impaired as well, Naperville police said.

Kristopher T. Zitt, 29, of the 4200 block of Windrift Drive in Aurora, was charged with allowing an intoxicated person to drive his vehicle, Naperville police Cmdr. Mike Anders said.

Anders said Gerard R. Kubicz, 30, of the 4700 block of Lake Valley Drive in Lisle, was pulled over while driving Zitt's 2002 Cadillac Escalade after 2 a.m. on Nov. 29.

Anders said an officer on patrol noticed the Escalade breaking traffic laws while heading north on Washington Street near North Avenue. The officer followed the Escalade and pulled it over at Ogden Avenue and Center Street, a couple blocks from the initial incident, he said.

Anders said Kubicz was found at the wheel with Zitt in the front passenger seat.

After Kubicz failed sobriety tests, he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage and driving left of the center line, Anders said.

However, Anders said officers also interviewed Zitt, who admitted letting Kubicz drive even though he knew Kubicz was impaired. After Zitt failed a field sobriety test, he was charged with knowingly permitting a person under the influence of alcohol to drive a vehicle, Anders said, which is a class A misdemeanor.

Both have been freed on bail.

Kubicz is due back in court Dec. 29, but court information was not available for Zitt.
