Lights-out performers Burke, Colmone cut short at Prospect
The Wheeling at Prospect girls gymnastic meet turned into a blackout.
A power outage halted the Mid-Suburban League East meet on the final rotation Tuesday with host Prospect leading Wheeling 96.05 to 85.15.
Prospect has three girls that still need to complete the floor exercise, while Wheeling has all five girls that need to complete the beam.
It has not been determined how the meet will conclude, but a couple options that were discussed include using the scores from the final events from the next conference meet.
Wheeling and Prospect will also be competing at the Palatine Invitational on Dec. 19, and the scores from the floor and beam could be used from that meet.
One thing that was clear was the state potential of both Prospect senior Katie Colmone and Wheeling senior Amy Burke.
Colmone took first on the bars with a 9.1 sticking a fontaine dismount. The senior was not able to stick it Saturday at the Rolling Meadows invite scoring a 8.35, but she nailed the dismount - which consist of a back flip with half twist front out - on Tuesday
"I was a bit nervous," said of Colmone who just added the skill this season. "I had a bit of a problem with the dismount on Saturday. I was excited to land it tonight."
Burke showed the same potential with her vault, taking first in the event with a 9.35. The senior also scored 8.45 to take second on the bars and had an 8.45 on the floor.
"Amy is really improving on the vault," added first year Wheeling coach Bridget Erickson of her senior star. "I think we can even amp it up a little more. Her leadership has been really important to the team, she is kind of guiding us and helping us get better."
With Colmone only participating in two events, sophomore Lauren Johnson picked up the slack on vault (8.6), bars (7.8), and beam (8.2) to pace the Knights.
A deep Prospect team also received a lift from juniors Sara Pekar on the vault (8.3), and Christina Pekar on the bars (7.85).
Senior Lindsay Johsnon and the freshman duo of Meggie Kania and Bailey Mcquire have also given the Knights an early lift this season.
"We have a lot of options," said Prospect coach Julian Basler. "The girls are all pushing each other."
Wheeling received a boost from Dana Nast on the vault (7.1) and Amy Lee on the floor (7.55).
