Timothy Christian hands Fenton tough loss

The Timothy Christian and Fenton game could have been a roller coaster with all the twists and turns and ups and downs Tuesday night.

In the end it was Timothy Christian that went on to win 32-31, but not before heroics on both sides.

First, it was Fenton's Maggie Lancaster who took her hand as hero as she took an inbounds pass with 15.8 seconds remaining with the Bison trailing by a point and hoisted up an 18-footer, which she banked in to give the Bison a 31-30 lead.

"That shot was just deflating for us," Timothy Christian coach Ryan DeKoekkoek said. "They set up an inbounds play and they put a shot up and it banks in. This was just a wild game. I just told our girls to bunker down after that."

After the made bucket the Trojans (4-3, 2-1) pushed the ball up the court and called a timeout with just more than six seconds remaining. It was the Trojans' last timeout.

On the inbounds pass the ball went to Cassidy Block, who was immediately fouled by Fenton's McKall Pugliese because they had a foul to give, eating up more of that clock.

With 3.8 seconds remaining, Timothy Christian went to its normal inbounds play. They run a back screen and it was set for Block and she cut to the basket wide open. She caught the inbounds pass and made the layup as time expired.

"I think she might have been surprised that she was that open," DeKoekkoek said. "But for a sophomore to make a shot like that, I am sure her confidence will skyrocket."

"That was just a play we run every day in practice," Block said. "I got a good screen and I just thought positive thoughts and said I wasn't going to miss it. It was a tough game tonight."

The game was especially tough for Fenton (4-5, 2-1) coach Tim Anderson as his team led almost the entire way until Timothy Christian's Amanda Dykema hit a 13-footer with just more than a minute and a half remaining to give Timothy Christian its first lead.

"I told our girls to stick together after this tough loss, it stings," Anderson said. "I told them the sun will come out tomorrow, probably behind some clouds, but it will still come out. We just need to stick together. I just want us to remember that shot Maggie hit and pretend it ended that way."

Pugliese scored a game-high 19 points in the loss.
