Cary-Grove edges Fremd

Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert could hardly hide his excitement.

Saffert watched with great satisfaction as his Trojans edged Fremd 55-54 in fourth round action of the Dundee-Crown girls basketball Thanksgiving Tournament Tuesday.

"We beat a very good aggressive team," said Saffert. "This is a great win. We aren't even as consistent as we will be yet. It was an incredible effort by the girls."

Things didn't look too good for the Trojans early in the second quarter. Cary-Grove (5-0) trailed Fremd 20-10 with 6:22 left before half.

But the resilient Trojans ended the half on a 14-5 run. A 3-pointer by Johanna Geegan and a pair of baskets by Christina Bear keyed the comeback and Cary-Grove trailed only 25-24 after 16 minutes.

Baskets by Olivia Jakubicek and Claire Jakubicek to start the second half gave the Trojans an early 28-25 third quarter lead. The Vikings showed their resiliency and regained the lead 38-37 on a 3-pointer by Ashley McConnell with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

The Vikings extended their lead to 7, 47-40, on a layup by Megan Hubbard with 3:44 left. But Cary-Grove battled back and took the lead for good 55-52 on a layup by Liz Bart with 52 seconds left.

Hubbard scored on a 12-footer to pull Fremd within a point with 25 seconds remaining. The Vikings stole the inbounds pass and called timeout to set up for the last shot. Fremd's McConnell got a open layup, but missed it and Cary-Grove held on for the win.

Claire and Olivia Jakubicek led Cary-Grove with 12 each while Geegan added 10. Taylor Glassman led Fremd with 12.
