Stevenson grads Boes, Feiger reap volleyball honors
A couple of former Stevenson volleyball players - both setters - have played key roles for their colleges this fall.
Junior setter Katharina Boes was among the top players on the Western New England College women's volleyball team that posted a 27-10 record this fall for its best season ever.
The 27 wins was a school record, breaking the mark of 22 set in 2007.
The Golden Bears, under rookie coach Kait Kozak, tied for first place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) during the regular season with a 9-1 mark.
Western New England College finished second in the conference tournament and advanced to the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division II Tournament.
Boss was all-conference for the second straight year, earning first-team honors.
She was a second-team pick in 2008 and also was the MVP of both the WNEC and Salem State Invitationals. Boss was also named to the Springfield Tom Hay Invitational all-tournament team.
Boes averaged 8.3 assists in 137 games and was third in conference matches with an 8.8 mark. She was third on the team in service aces (56) and blocks (57) and fourth in digs (322).
She also passed the 2,000 assist mark during the season and ranks second on the school's all-time list in that category (2,882).
• The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 29th annual All-America teams for NCAA Division III and Tufts University senior setter Dena Feiger (Stevenson) is on the second team.
She is the first Tufts volleyball player to earn an All-America honor above honorable mention in the program's history.
Feiger, the most recognized player in Tufts history, is the only player from New England on the AVCA All-America first or second teams.
She was the 2009 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and New England Women's Volleyball Association player of the year.
The AVCA recognized her as an honorable mention All-American for the 2008 season.
Feiger is ranked second in the NCAA Division III statistics through November 15 with 11.18 assists per set.
Football
Elmhurst College's Jon Janus (Lake Zurich) has received College Conference of Wisconsin and Illinois all conference second-team honors. Janus plays strong safety and returns kickoffs and punts.
Men's soccer
Concordia University's Kyle Sytsma (Antioch) was named to the all-freshman team in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC). He started all 21 games for the Falcons as center midfielder and scored 6 goals and 5 assists. He was second in the conference in shot attempts and 12th in scoring. The Falcons finished 12-4-5.
Men's cross country
• The University of Chicago men's cross country team finished 10th in a field of 39 schools at the 2009 Midwest regional championship at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Sophomore Mahmoud Bahraini (Vernon Hills) earned all-region honors with a 27th-place finish. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:09.
Women's soccer
DePaul leading scorer and junior midfielder Tara Strickland (Libertyville) was named to the all-Big East second team, while freshman defender Chelsea Grant (Mundelein) was chosen for the all-Big East rookie team.
Strickland finished with team highs in points (20), goals (7) and assists (6). She is tied for fourth in career assists with 11, seventh all-time in points with 33 and eighth in goals with 11.
Grant solidified the Blue Demons' back line.
DePaul advanced to the playoffs after being picked to finish last in a preseason poll of Big East coaches.
