Glen Ellyn man charged with eighth drunken driving offense, police say

A Glen Ellyn man racked up a spate of DUI arrests in the 1980s and 1990s. Then a Halloween night arrest led to what police say is his eighth drunken driving charge.

Jay C. Woods, 51, of the 800 block of Saddlewood, appeared in court Friday, Nov. 20. He was arrested by Glendale Heights police just after 7 p.m. Oct. 31 on the 1500 block of Glen Ellyn Road after officers observed his silver, 1992 Plymouth Voyager minivan swerving in and out of traffic.

Once they stopped the vehicle, police said Woods showed signs he was under the influence of alcohol. Officers arrested him and he later was charged with aggravated DUI, a felony, by the DuPage County state's attorney's office.

He remains in DuPage County jail in Wheaton on a $500,000 bond, officials said Sunday.

A search of DuPage County court records shows at least six drunken driving charges between 1986 an 1997. Glendale Heights police say Woods' Oct. 31 arrest is his eighth DUI offense.

Officials in the DuPage County state's attorney's office could not be reached for comment or to confirm the date of Woods' next court appearance.

Glendale Heights police said they seized Woods' minivan, and it is being held for forfeiture proceedings.
