Aurora police run for Special Athletes

The Aurora Police Department will wrap up its yearlong fundraising effort for Special Olympics Illinois Saturday with a 5K run.

The second annual "Run for Athletes" steps off at 9 a.m. at Blackberry Farm, 100 S. Barnes Road, in an attempt to raise at least $15,000 for Illinois' Special Olympics games held in June in Bloomington.

Sgt. Doug Podschweit said the course is situated on blacktop and gravel and winds along the Gilman Bike Trail and Blackberry Farm's Lake Gregory.

"For someone just out looking for a run on Saturday morning, this is a very nice, scenic route down the Prairie Path," he said. "And it's a great cause and lot of fun."

Last year's race, the first in Aurora, brought out 62 runners. More than 100 have registered for Saturday's run with many more expected if the weather holds.

Entry fees are $25 and awards will be distributed for the top overall male and female finishers along with winners in eight different age groups. Refreshments will be provided after the race.

Podschweit said the department has been partnering with Special Olympics Illinois for nine years by holding fundraising events. But the "Run for Athletes" is by far the biggest draw.

"We realize many of our schools send these gifted athletes to the games and they go on to make great accomplishments," Podschweit said. "It's very rewarding to know our department has done all we can to ensure they get a chance to compete and experience the games."

Organizers are seeking volunteers to help with the race. They should plan to arrive by 8 a.m. with the finish slated for 10:30 a.m. For details, call (630) 973-6761.
