Even Democrats have primaries in DuPage County

DuPage County's fourth district looks to be the primary hot spot come Feb. 2, 2010.

Races for both Republicans and - for the first time in recent memory - Democrats in that district will feature primary battles for the two-year term on the county and board and the four-year seat on the forest preserve commission.

Republican county board incumbent JR McBride is facing challenges from Sam Jacob and Brad Webb. Meanwhile, Democrats Tom Wendorf and Thomas Grimston will slug it out for their party's nod.

At the forest preserve level, District 4 incumbent Republican commissioner Mike Formento is facing a primary challenge from former Wheaton Mayor Jim Carr. Democrats Eric Bergman and Don Kirchenberg are also headed toward a primary fight.

In all, there are scheduled to be nine Republican and three Democratic primaries in DuPage County. But that's only if everyone who has filed makes it onto the ballot. None of the candidates' nominating papers have been challenged yet, DuPage Election Commission officials said. The deadline to file objections to someone's candidacy is 4:30 p.m. Nov. 9.

County Democratic Party leaders said they were happy with the crop of candidates and pleasantly surprised by the primary fights. However, they didn't fill slots for every race like they had hoped to.

"We're pleased that we have that many Democrats willing to run, which I would say that's a first out here to have so many," DuPage Democratic Party Chairman Bob Peickert said. "But honestly I thought we'd have more primaries just because of the number of people who had come forward indicating an interest in running."

The Democrats third primary is in the District 5 county board race where Joseph C. Wozniak will square off against Brian Duewel. That's not to be confused with Joseph M. Wozniak, who is running as a Republican for that same seat against incumbent John Zediker and is the Democratic candidate's father. That could make life kind of awkward in the Wozniaks' Naperville home they share if the father and son wind up facing one another in November.

Republican District 2 forest preserve commissioner Joe Cantore doesn't have to worry about a primary anymore. Allen Gill had lined up before 8 a.m. last Monday to be first on the ballot in that race, but recently decided to drop out for "personal family reasons," he said.

A lottery is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 to determine top ballot placement for the dozens of candidates who were in line at 8 a.m. on the first day of filing last week.

State Sen. Carole Pankau has secured her ballot position in the Republican's race for county board chairman. She'll be last on the ballot after filing her paperwork Monday morning. Her competition includes state Sen. Dan Cronin, Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso and current District 4 board member Debra Olson. A lottery will determine their spot on the ballot. Democrat Carole Cheney will face no primary competition for the county board chairman nomination.

No Green Party candidates emerged for any of the county posts.
