Honduras trip a wasteful one

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam's recent trip to Honduras was inappropriate. He met with current leader Roberto Micheletti, who was part of a military coup overthrowing a democratically elected leader, President Manuel Zelaya.

The coup has been responsible for shutting down the media. A number of U.S. church organizations who have contacts in Honduras continue to report physical abuse against any opposition to the coup leaders.

A former missionary who has served for many years in the area related that Roberto Micheletti has the support of a few wealthy families who feel threatened by President Manuel Zelaya's policies. The excuse Micheletti used to take over Honduras was not true. The scheduled election that the coup stopped was not for Zelaya to "defy term limits" for the democratically elected president as the coup claims. A public request of the election was to vote on the need for a constitution convention to conduct a rewrite for the constitution which may have favored the poor.

Roskam not only went against our administration's current foreign policy regarding Honduras, but wastefully spent taxpayers money.
