WW South peaking at right time
Wheaton Warrenville South's season began with two brutally tough matchups and a third loss in four football games dating back to last year.
The campaign continues this weekend as usual - with the Tigers on a roll.
After sweeping through the DuPage Valley Conference for its fourth title in five years, WW South (8-1) begins play in the Class 7A playoffs as a favorite to contend for a sixth state championship.
The No. 2 Tigers, trying to erase the sting of last season's upset loss to Downers Grove North, host No. 7 St. Laurence (6-3) at 7 p.m. today.
"Last year we weren't playing our best when we went into the playoffs," said Tigers coach Ron Muhitch. "We're playing a lot better now. It's evident in so many ways."
The biggest improvement this season is on the defensive side of the ball where the Tigers rebuilt around only two returning starters in lineman Matt Ives and cornerback Shane Dierking. While both players are enjoying standout seasons, it's been the emergence of linebackers Tom LaBelle, Mike Heaton and Jack Eshelman that's allowed the defense to really shine.
In the first two weeks of the season, WW South allowed 53 points to Hinsdale Central and Maine South. In the seven games since the Tigers have allowed 28 points and shut out three opponents.
The offense isn't too shabby, either. Junior Reilly O'Toole quietly has developed into one of the area's elite quarterbacks. He's completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,250 yards and 16 touchdowns against no interceptions.
Running back Matt Rogers, starting for injured Julian Banuelos, has notched consecutive 100-yard rushing performances behind a line led by Rocco Ammons and Nick Immekus.
It's another strong and balanced Tigers team looking for another deep playoff run. Despite a difficult draw in a 7A quadrant, everything's in place to make it happen.
"I like where we're at as a team," Muhitch said. "We're very happy with how the kids are playing."
