East High jazz concert

The St. Charles East jazz bands will take to the stage at 7:30 tonight at the Norris Cultural Arts Center for their first concert performance of the school year. The concert will feature the jazz band and jazz workshop. The jazz band portion of the concert will include music written by Sonny Rollins, Ray Bryant, and Richie Powell. The jazz workshop will be performing music written by Duke Ellington, Bill Holman, Oliver Nelson and Astor Piazzolla. Tickets are $3 and will be available at the door. Financial investment lecture

John P. Calamos, chairman of Calamos Asset Management Inc., will talk about financial investment and entrepreneurship during a business lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wheaton College. Calamos has pioneered investment strategies and techniques to help manage risk for major institutional and individual investors for more than 30 years. He has written two books. Wednesday night's free lecture, presented by J. Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government and Public Policy, will be in Blanchard Hall, room 339, located at 501 College Avenue. Dog obedience trial

Fox Valley Dog Training Club will be hosting its 58th annual Obedience Trial and 4th annual Rally Trial Nov. 8 at the Kane County Fairgrounds. Spectators are welcome to watch many breeds of dogs competing at the three main levels of Obedience and three levels of Rally. Show hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free. Aurora cops plan 5K race

The Aurora Police Department, in association with Special Olympics Illinois, Blackberry Farm and Fox Valley Park District, will stage its second annual Run for Athletes at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at Blackberry Farm, 100 S. Barnes Road. The 5K run and walk is part of the department's yearlong fundraising effort for Special Olympics. Entry fees are $25. Call (630) 973-6761 or visit signmeup.com.

Ready to read, Fox Valley?

Aurora Public Library joins the Oswego Public Library District and Messenger Public Library of North Aurora for this year's Fox Valley Reads program, which runs through Nov. 15. This year's selections celebrate the centennial of the Daniel Burnham Plan of Chicago, including "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson; "Haymarket" by Martin Duberman and "The Sinking of the Eastland" by Jay Bonansinga.
