Dundee-Crown's Barnes sets state serving record

Dundee-Crown sophomore volleyball player Tess Barnes made state history on Saturday.

Playing in the Lake Park Invite against Chicago Perspectives Charter, Barnes sat out during a 25-5 victory in Game 1 before she was inserted to serve the first point of Game 2. She never left the service line.

The setter served 25 straight points, and Dundee-Crown never had to rotate as the Chargers blanked the Panthers 25-0. It's a feat that has been accomplished only four times in IHSA competition, most recently by Carly Hayes of Crystal Lake Central in a match against Marengo in 2006.

Barnes' 19 aces set a new state record for a single game, breaking Hayes' record of 16 against Marengo.

"I can't believe it. I'm pretty surprised," Barnes said when informed of the record on Monday. "My coach (Tracy Williams) told my dad (David) it had to be a record, but I thought she was just joking around. The way I look it is that I've probably made a million serves in my life, including practice, so 25 in a row isn't that much."

Barnes served conservatively for the first 24 points, but she asked her coach if she could use a jump serve to close out the match.

"She wouldn't let me," Barnes said.

"I said, 'Heck no. You're not going to jump serve and ruin it now,' " Williams said. " She started laughing and just served it. It was fun. It was the highlight of our day."
