Arlington Heights pair recognized for collegiate volleyball greatness

Two women living in northwest suburbs recently were inducted into their college Hall of Fames.

Coincidentally, both are former volleyball standouts and live in Arlington Heights.

Daiva Tomkus-Fuerst and Helen Joyce-King have earned Hall of Fame recognition at UCLA and the University of Tennessee-Martin, respectively.

Furthermore, both of their children will one day attend Hersey High School.

Tomkus-Fuest is the volleyball coordinator and one of the coaches at St. James.

She was a four-year letter-winner at UCLA in volleyball from 1986-89 and the first UCLA player to be named a first team All-American three times (1987-88-89).

Tomkus-Fuerst was also the first woman in Pac-10 history to win two conference player of the year awards (1988-89). Tomkus led the Bruins to a record of 123-24 and two NCAA Final Four appearances over her four years and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week six times.

At the time of her graduation, she stood as the all-time UCLA leader in single season and career hitting percentage, single season and career blocks, single season and career block assists, and was second in single season and career aces.

After graduating in 1990, Tomkus played for the USA Volleyball team until 1994. Tomkus was also named to the UCLA All-Decade Team for the 1980s.

• Joyce-King, who graduated from Rolling Meadows in 1990 and was the Daily Herald all-area honorary captain in 1989, served as the setter on the UTM team that made the transition to Division I and joined the Ohio Valley Conference during her junior year. Joyce-King was second in assists in the OVC her junior season.

She is fourth in the UTM record books for assists per game during her junior year and tenth for assists per game during her senior year.

Joyce-King was also an outstanding student earning the OVC Medal of Honor during her senior year.

In her senior year at Meadows,the Mustangs were 40-3 and finished third in the state finals.

Helen's husband Greg, was a baseball player at Tennessee-Martin and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2005.

Helen and Greg are the only husband and wife to both be inducted in the Tennessee-Martin Athletic Hall of Fame.

Men's cross country

North Central College claimed its fifth invitational victory when it won the 18-team Benedictine University Eagle Invitational. Emilio Saraga (Hoffman Estates) was the top North Central finisher, clocking a 26:52.15 for the 8,000 meter course. The Cardinals finished with 46 points to top runner-up Marian University (Ind.) by seven.

Women's volleyball

Hillary Trebles (Prospect), a sophomore at the University of Virginia, made her first collegiate start for the Cavaliers against UCLA and led the team with a personal-best 4 blocks.

In addition, she had 3 kills on 6 swings with no errors for a .500 attack percentage and also had 2 digs. For the first time in program history, Virginia took one set from a top-10 nationally ranked opponent, but it wasn't enough as the Cavaliers fell to No. 8 UCLA, 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 14-25, 16-25), on the second day of the Ameritas Players Challenge at the University of Nebraska.

Trebels spent the summer playing with the USA Junior National volleyball team competing against the Swiss Senior National team in Zurich, Switzerland and against several high level European club teams in Pula, Croatia.

Trebels leads the Cavaliers this fall with a .290 attack percentage. • Sarah Sulentic (Conant) of St. Norbert College leads the Midwest Conference in hitting percentage (.389) and is listed 46th in the NCAA Division III leaders with that figure. She led St. Norbert in a five-set win over Carroll College with 12 kills and 5 blocks and also led the team in a three-set match against Monmouth with 9 kills.

Basketball

Tryouts for the Wheeling Girls basketball feeder program will be Sunday, Oct 25 at Wheeling High School.

Fourth, fifth and sixth-grade girls will be from 4 to 5 p.m., seventh grade (5 to 6 p.m.) and eighth grade (6 to 7 p.m.)

• The Junior Lady Knights Feeder tryouts will be Nov. 7-8 at the Jean Walker Field House at Prospect High School.

On Nov. 7, fourth-grade and seventh-grade girl tryouts are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; fifth grade 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.; sixth grade 2 p.m. to 3:30 pm; eighth grade 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On Nov. 8, tryouts will be at the Central Community Center in Mt. Prospect. Fouth and fifth graders noon to 1 p.m., sixth grade 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., eighth grade, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and seventh grade 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

• The Prospect High School Boy's Feeder Basketball Program is hosting tryouts for 6th, 7th and 8th graders on Sunday, October 25 and Sunday, November 1. For further information visit the website @ www.juniorknights.com.

• The Elk Grove Boys Feeder Basketball League will be holding tryouts on Sunday November 29th and Sunday December 6th from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM in the Elk Grove High School gym. Elk Grove High School is located at 500 W. Elk Grove Blvd. in Elk Grove Village. The league is for 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys that are in the Elk Grove High School district boundaries.

• The Rolling Meadows Junior Mustangs will be conducting tryouts for the girls' fifth grade and boys' and girls' sixth, seventh and eighth grade feeder basketball teams on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Rolling Meadows High School. All boys and girls in the Rolling Meadows High School attendance area are encouraged to attend.

Fifth and sixth grade tryouts will be from noon to 1:15 pm. Seventh grade tryouts will be from 1:15 p.m to 2:30 pm. Eighth grade tryouts will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Football

Kelly Jauch (Fremd), a sophomore at Carthage, has played in every game at linebacker and was credited with 11 tackles so far this season.

Men's soccer

Augustana College's Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove) has scored 3 goals, including a winning goal against Carthage. and a goal against North Park.

Teammates Eric Love (Buffalo Grove) scored against Elmhurst and Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich) had a goal against Lake Forest and North Park.

Wrestling

The Cardinals Youth Wrestling Club will begin its 29th season with an information and sign-up meeting at 7:30pm Thursday, Oct. 22.

The meeting will be in the cafeteria at Prospect High School. There will be Q & A, a meet and greet with the coaching staff and exciting videos of previous seasons.

The Cardinals started in 1980 and are the oldest and most accomplished youth wrestling club in the Northwest suburbs. Thye have a highly-experienced instructional staff.

The Cardinal mission is to instill physical fitness, self confidence and sportsmanship in every wrestler while preparing him or her for competitive athletics.

All children K-8 and parents are welcome.

The Cardinal roster consists of wrestlers from Arlington Heights, Mt. Prospect, Elk Grove, Schaumburg, Des Plaines, Prospect Heights, Palatine, Rolling Meadows and Buffalo Grove.

Rugby

The Arlington Stallions Rugby Club will hold an Informational/Early Sign-Up meeting for all potential players and family members on Sunday, Nov. 15th at 1 p.m. at the Arlington Heights AthletiCo facility. The address is 88 S. Arlington Heights Road.

The Stallions are a competitive sports club that offers middle and high school boys the opportunity to play this sport during the spring season. In 2009, the club fielded two middle school and one high school side.

In 2010, the club expects to add a frosh-soph side in an effort to offer participation to more players.

The International Olympic Committee announced on October 9th that rugby will be a demonstration sport in the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics.

The club is a member of the IYRA and USA Rugby. Club coaches are certified and a certified athletic trainer is in attendance at all matches.

Women's cross country

The North Central College women's cross country team placed in the top ten as a team for the sixth time this season with its ninth-place finish at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.

Sophomore Amy Schwent (Hoffman Estates) crossed the finish line in a time of 23:16 to place 81st overall.

Kala Bingham (Barrington) finished out the Cardinals' scoring top five in 82nd with a time of 23:18.
