Scouting Geneva @ Kaneland

Geneva (6-1, 4-1) at Kaneland (5-2, 4-1)

Game time 7:30 p.m. today

Last year Geneva 42, Kaneland 7.

Last week Rochelle 21, Geneva 14; Kaneland 35, DeKalb 6.

Outlook Leaving 4-1 Glenbard South to fend for itself these last two weeks against difficult Rochelle and Sycamore, and with sub-. 500 opponents in Week 9 for Geneva and Kaneland, this game stands as the one for the Western Sun Conference's remaining marbles. Geneva hopes to go 4-for-4 in WSC titles while Kaneland aims to win its first since tying with Batavia and Geneva for the league's 2006 inaugural title. They kind of go opposite directions to achieve their goals. Geneva has run for 1,272 yards with Jay Graffagna, Connor Quinn and Michael Santacaterina each posting a minimum 300 yards, while Brandon Beitzel has completed 51 of 88 passes for 629 yards. Kaneland quarterback Joe Camiliere has spread his 1,725 passing yards to a herd of receivers: Ryley Bailey, Blake Serpa, Tyler Callaghan, Quinn Buschbacher and Taylor Andrews, who caught 7 passes for 161 yards against DeKalb. Though Knights coach Tom Fedderly has expressed more dedication to the run with Eric Tattoni, Camiliere's 309 yards rushing are half of Kaneland's 606-yard total. So, this one weighs heavily on line play and whichever can exact its will most proficiently without ignoring its secondary offensive features. "We know they're going to catch the ball," Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. "We want to make sure they don't get any yardage after that." He'll charge his top coverage guys - Santacaterina, Kevin Major, Nolan Block, Doug Berthold and Ryan Landrum, linebacker Bret Shannon - with that mission. On the other hand, Fedderly said Geneva's been able to pass the ball well against Kaneland, and he sure doesn't want his Knights to become one-dimensional. Defensively, this game features rugged individualists like Geneva's Frank Boenzi, Asa Bielenberg, Bryan Kenney, Shannon and Quinn; and Kaneland's linebackers Serpa and Brett Ketza, and Eric Dratnol, who last week made an impressive 8 tackles from his spot on the line. While Kaneland rolled the Barbs last week, Geneva lost that squeaker to Rochelle but Wicinski is not dismayed: "Ninety-five percent of the teams in the state would love to be 6-1 and have their destiny in front of them, and that's where we're at." A wet surface may have ramifications, but at windy (though dry) DeKalb, Camiliere completed 14 of 21 passes without an interception. Wicinski believes the Vikings "won't be able to muscle these guys," but Kaneland has several two-way starters on the line, which could have an impact over the long haul. In what promises to be an outstanding contest, Fedderly could be speaking for both clubs when he says: "We just have to play a solid game and limit our mistakes."

Next week Geneva at Batavia (1-6, 0-5), Oct. 23; Kaneland at Yorkville (3-4, 2-3).
