Teen jailed for smoking marijuana while on bond
An 18-year-old Vernon Hills woman was jailed Thursday after she tested positive for marijuana use while on bond in two criminal cases.
Aerin Nilsen, of the 200 block of S. Old Creek Road, must now post $7,500 in cash in order to be released from jail.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Bolling Haxall said Nilsen was originally charged May 8 in connection with the theft of wallets and iPods from a locker room at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire.
A locker room attendant, who had stopped Nilsen coming out of the locker area and made her identify herself, called police when nine girls in a gym class reported their wallets and iPods were missing.
Nilsen and Sarah Howell, 18, of the 6000 block of Windham Lane in Long Grove, left the school and used one of the stolen credit cards to buy gasoline and tobacco, Haxall said.
Three iPods stolen from the lockers were sold at a Mundelein-area pawnshop the same day, Haxall said.
Howell was originally charged with felony forgery and unlawful use of a credit card, but pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft July 28 and was placed on court supervision.
Nilsen was charged with felony theft and unlawful use of a credit card and posted $500 for bond.
On July 16, Haxall said Nilsen lost control of her car while driving in Lake Zurich and fled on foot after the car crashed. Police said she called police to report the car stolen, but officers were able to figure out what happened and arrested her. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and making a false 911 report. Haxall said Nilsen was released from custody after posting $100 for bond.
She appeared before Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the theft and credit card charges.
But Potkonjak was given a report that stated Nilsen had tested positive for marijuana use at the county probation department before coming to court.
He found her in violation of her original bond conditions and ordered her jailed on $75,000 bond.
Nilsen is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 20.
