River Road project delayed

River Road between Jefferson and Ogden avenues in Naperville will remain closed through Friday, Aug. 16, as extensive resurfacing continues. Work by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway to replace the street-level railroad crossing has been delayed by bad weather. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays. Hotel earns green award

Several environmental moves made by a Glen Ellyn hotel were recognized early this month by the DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Crowne Plaza, 1250 Roosevelt Road, was awarded the 2009 Green Initiative Award at the bureau's annual luncheon. The hotel has implemented several programs, such as guest recycling and energy-reducing boilers. The hotel opened in August 2008 as the first "green" Crowne Plaza in the area. It uses hybrid transportation, regional vendors and recyclable paper for the menus at the adjacent Glen Prairie restaurant.

PADS plans breakfast

Author Gary Moore will be the featured speaker when DuPage PADS celebrates its seventh annual Wake Up Your Spirit Breakfast at 7 a.m. Nov. 4 in Benedictine University's Krasa Center, 5700 College Road, Lisle. Moore wrote "Playing with the Enemy," winner of the 2006 Military Writers Society of American Book of the Year award. Tickets are $40 and benefit DuPage Public Action to Deliver Shelter. Aurora cops plan 5K race

The Aurora Police Department, in association with Special Olympics Illinois, Blackberry Farm and Fox Valley Park District, will stage its second annual Run for Athletes at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at Blackberry Farm, 100 S. Barnes Road. The 5K run and walk is part of the department's yearlong fundraising effort for Special Olympics. Entry fees are $20 before Oct. 20 and $25 after. Tree dedication ceremony set

A tree dedication ceremony to remember a Naperville kindergarten student who succumbed to a rare pediatric brain cancer is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Cantore Park, 2507 Warm Springs Lane, Naperville. Max Lacewell was a kindergarten student at neighboring Welch Elementary School. Run to combat melanoma

The sixth annual This Run's For Jack Melanoma 5K Run/Walk steps off at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in Glen Ellyn's Ackerman Park along St. Charles Road. Roughly 1,500 runners and walkers are expected to participate to benefit the research and awareness programs of the Jack H. Marston II Melanoma Fund. Aurora will accept nominations through Nov. 20 for the 2010 Outstanding African-American Award to be presented by the city's African-American Heritage Advisory Board.
