Persistence pays dividends for Warren
The third time was the charm for Warren's girls volleyball team.
After losing twice to Carmel in the Lake Zurich tournament last weekend, the Blue Devils came back to defeat the host Corsairs 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 in a nonconference match on Tuesday evening.
In Games 1 and 3, the Blue Devils came back from 8-point deficits.
In Game 3, Carmel scored the first 3 points and led by as much as 17-11. But things started to slip away as Warren came back to tie the game 22-22, taking advantage of 7 unforced errors by the Corsairs.
Sarah Stanton scored on a kill to give the Corsairs a 23-22 lead. But Alex Booker's ace, and Libby Perrone and Emily Rediger's consecutive kills gave the Blue Devils the final 3 points of the match.
"It was pretty intense," said Rediger, who finished the match with 4 kills. "Everybody was down, and we normally fall apart. But this time, we were hustling out there and I felt that we kept our heads in the game and it worked out well."
Warren improved to 5-20 while Carmel fell to 14-17.
"We started talking and we started hustling and we started being aggressive," Warren coach Julie Filippo said."Those are things that we try to drill into the girls. There are things that as coaches we have no control over, so it's got to come from their hearts."
In Game 1, Carmel led 23-18, but Warren finished with a 7-0 run as Carmel had 5 unforced errors.
The second game was tied 21-21, before Carmel finished with 4 straight points. Erin Paterkiewicz served an ace, Taylor Roby scored a kill, a Warren tap landed out of bounds, and Stanton finished the game with a kill.
Stanton finished the match with 10 kills.
Also for Carmel, Hannah Turner slammed 8 kills, Roby finished with 5 kills, while Sarah Grum and Paterkiewicz each had three. Turner and Sam Salvi had 11 and digs, respectively.
Stanton served 17 of 19 with 2 aces, while CC Federer was 14-of-15 serving with 2 aces.
For Warren, Booker, Nicole Klosterman and Rediger each had 4 kills. Booker had 18 digs while Kerry Eddy had 17.
"We could have had it," Carmel coach Bill Szczesniak said. "But Warren played. We beat them twice over the weekend and they came real fired up and they had a real nice game."
