Flynn, Biddle fuel Wheaton Academy's downstate mission

Wheaton Academy is on a mission.

The Warriors took another step in their quest for the first male state title in school history with yet another dominant performance at their Class 2A golf sectional on Monday at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

With defending state champion David Flynn leading the way with a 3-under-par 69, Wheaton Academy advanced to the state finals this weekend at the ISU Weibring Course in Normal for the third straight year.

UNLV-bound Blake Biddle was equally brilliant for the Warriors, also finishing in the red with a 71 as the squad defeated runner-up Grayslake Central by 19 strokes with its 297 total.

"I would characterize (my round) as very solid," said Flynn, who posted 6 birdies on the day at the Warriors' home course. "I gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities today. I think I only missed one fairway."

Biddle struggled at times with the greens, but still managed to post yet another anchor score for Wheaton Academy.

"Par was my friend today," the St. Charles resident said. "I made 15 pars, 2 birdies and a bogey. I have been hitting the ball so (well). The thing about this team is that we are so deep."

"It's a rare one-two punch in high school golf," Wheaton Academy coach Bob Broman said of his four-year senior starters.

Elio Vento and Geneva resident CJ Urbanowski had respective rounds of 78 and 79 to conclude the Warriors' four cards.

"That's our goal in every tournament is to have four guys in the 70s," said Broman, whose team was third in state last year. "Their state of mind is of a very serious nature right now."

Three area players made the state cut as at-large competitors: Montini junior Eric Lederman and IMSA junior Luke Nayak had 74s to lead all scorers among non-state-qualifying teams; Marmion senior Timmy Johnson led the Cadets (325) to eighth in the team standings with a 77. St. Francis (323) finished seventh, but failed to qualify any individuals.
