Red Wings lose Franzen; tears ACL against Hawks

The Red Wings paid a steep price for their 3-2 win over the Blackhawks when they announced Friday Johan Franzen tore the ACL in his left knee during the game and would miss at least the next four months.

It's not known how or when Franzen got hurt, but it came after he scored what turned out to be the winning goal on a power play in the second period.

Franzen was Detroit's second-leading goal scorer last season with 34. The Wings now have lost their top two goal scorers from a year ago in Franzen and Marian Hossa, who is now with the Hawks.

A four-month return for Franzen is on the optimistic side. When Adam Burish tore the ACL in his knee during the preseason, the Hawks said he would miss six months.

Bickell back down: The Hawks returned left winger Bryan Bickell to Rockford on Friday, paving the way for Dave Bolland's return to the lineup.

Bolland missed Thursday's game at Detroit with a sore back.

Bickell played only six-plus minutes against the Red Wings but was credited with a team-leading 5 hits.

Tip-ins: The Hawks worked on power play positioning around the net at practice on Friday- Ex-Hawk Jocelyn Thibault is in his first season as Colorado's goaltending coach- The Hawks lost their home opener last year 3-2 to Nashville in a shootout.
