Burlington Central finishes second in Iowa

The Burlington Central girls volleyball team has has its share of success the past few years in the Bettendorf, Iowa tournament and the Rockets did again on Saturday.

BC went 4-1, losing only to undefeated Ankeny, the top-ranked team in Iowa, 25-22, 25-18 in the championship match.

Prior to that the Rockets (19-7) downed North Scott 21-12, 21-13; West Des Moines Valley (No. 5 in Iowa) 21-19, 12-21, 15-13; Iowa City (No. 3) 21-12, 15-21, 15-12; and Bettendorf (No. 11) 14-25, 25-19, 15-8.

"We're real pleased," said BC coach Marv Leavitt. "We beat three Iowa ranked teams and we just ran out of steam against Ankeny."

Senior standout Stephanie Holthus led the Rockets with 70 kills and 5 aces for the tournament. Senior Taylor Scully added 26 kills and 7 aces and sophomore setter Katlyn O'Reilly had 102 assists.

But Leavitt was most pleased with the play of sophomores Brenda Thasavong (11 kills, 9 blocks) and Sydney Sand (12 kills, 13 blocks).

"We had a lot more balance today and that was nice to see," Leavitt said. "They just wouldn't give up. We had our ups and downs and we weren't consistent all day but we found a way in the close matches."

Audrey Djukic added 9 kills for the Rockets, whose losses this season are to Joliet Catholic, Hampshire, St. Francis, Geneva, Ankeny and two of the top-ranked teams in Wisconsin.
