Kitchen fire causes evacuation of Wheaton condominium

Wheaton Fire officials are blaming unattended cooking for an early morning fire that caused the evacuation of a condominium unit at in the 1500 block of Timber Trail Thursday morning.

According to a news release, the fire department was called to the scene of the structure fire in the multi-unit condominium unit at 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Upon arriving on the scene, officials saw smoke coming from one of the condo units and entered the blaze, the news release continues.

The building had been safely evacuated prior to the fire, which emanated from a kitchen. The fire was contained in minutes, the release states, but not until it causes some fire damage and heavy smoke damage.

Occupants of the unit where the fire started were unable to return to their residence after the fire, however residents of the rest of the building were able to go back home, the release states.

Fire officials conducted an investigation and it was determined the fire was accidental and most likely the result of unattended cooking operation.
