Mt. Prospect celebrates Walk to School Day

Parents, teachers and community leaders joined students at Lions Park Elementary in Mount Prospect Wednesday observed International Walk to School Day.

The Mount Prospect Elementary District 57 school was among many around the suburbs - and the world - who participated in the effort that aims to promote safety and school and community connections and raise consciousness about the benefits to the health of the body and the planet of walking.

International Walk to School Day was expected to include students from all 50 states and 40 countries.

As part of the celebration at Lions Park, organized by the PTA and its environmental committee, students also got a visit from Officer Friendly, and the police department and other local groups provided prizes for students.

The Chicago-based Active Transportation Alliance also sponsored its own version of the event Wednesday, which it called Walk and Roll to School Day. The alliance awarded mini-grants to some participating schools.
