Kane sheriff seeks nominees for Citizen of the Year
Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez is seeking nominations for the Roscoe Ebey Citizen of the Year Award. This is an award presented by Sheriff Perez to a citizen who has been proactive in making a difference in their community.
This award was created in 2007 and named after Aurora Township resident Roscoe Ebey. In May 2007, Ebey was murdered in his home. A neighbor acted with complete disregard for his own safety by confronting the offender and held him until police arrived.
The 83-year-old World War II veteran was known throughout his neighborhood as a kind, caring and selfless man who would think nothing of giving up his own time to help one of his neighbors. The first honoree was Leslie Fleming, the neighbor who captured the offender. The 2008 honoree was the Rev. David Engbarth.
According to Sheriff Perez, it is the actions of these unsung heroes who keep the spirit of "community" alive in our county. In these tough economic times there are countless heroes throughout the community who have given so much of their own time and energy to help those who are in need. Anyone wishing to submit a nominee should contact Dawn Barsanti at (630) 208-2003.
More information about the Roscoe Ebey award can be found on the Kane County Sheriff's Department Web site at www.kanesheriff.com. The deadline is Friday, Oct. 16.
