Saturday's Fox Valley roundup
Hampshire Tourney: South Elgin (11-2-1) was able to overcome a physical semifinal match en route to a 2-0 victory over Plainfield East and then soundly defeated the host Whip-Purs 7-0 in the championship game at the Hampshire Tournament.
In game 1, Bart Mazurek found the back of the net twice for the Storm while Matt Shipon and Onyx Gonzalez each recorded 1 assist. The Storm wasted no time getting started in game 2 as they recorded 4 goals within the first 15 minutes of the match. Mazurek picked up right where he left off recording a hat trick. Nick Pawlowski added 2 goals while Dan Bohlin and freshman call-up Alberto Bustamonte also registered 1 goal apiece. Gonzalez (3 assists), Mazurek, Shipon, and Bryan Irwin all recorded assists in the championship victory. Ryan Hicks preserved the shutout recording 6 saves in goal.
Huntley (7-8-2) turned in a third place performance at the Hampshire Tournament falling to host Hampshire 2-1 in the semifinal match, losing the game in a shootout. The Red-Raiders then picked up a 3-0 victory aginast Plainfield East to secure third place. In game 1, the Whip-Purs only recorded 2 shots on goal Ismael Morales made his shot count giving Hampshire a 1-0 halftime lead. Javier Diaz tied the game up at one all as he took a feed from Kyle Lewandowski and put it in the back of the net. The game was then decided on a shootout in which Hampshire edged out Huntley 5-4.
In the third place game, Huntley got on the board early, scoring all 3 of its goals in the first half. Diaz recorded the Red Raiders' first goal off an assist from Lucas Baker. Mahi Islam scored Huntley's final 2 goals while Sean Tlapek and Kareem Rassas picked up 1 assist apiece. Kevin Montelongo saved 9 shots on goal for the Red Raiders in their third place victory.
Burlington Central 2, Stillman Valley 1: The Rockets (11-4-2) outshot Stillman Valley 21-11 and came out on top with a 2-1 victory in this nonconference matchup. Christopher Gousios got the Rockets on the board in the first half off a feed from Alexis Camarena. Camarena then recorded the game-winning goal in the second half on a Kyle Reopelle assist. Alex Pieper was busy in goal recording 10 saves in goal.
