Scouting St. Charles East @ Waubonsie Valley
St. Charles East (3-2, 3-0) at Waubonsie Valley (3-2, 2-1)
Game time 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Last year St. Charles East 21, Waubonsie Valley 0.
Last week St. Charles East 41, East Aurora 0; Neuqua Valley 28, Waubonsie Valley 7.
Outlook This was to be a battle between Upstate Eight unbeatens. Neuqua Valley spoiled that notion. Waubonsie Valley allowed a 78-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, either muffed or fumbled or threw the ball away six times, and the Indian Prairie Classic was history. Emotions got the best of the Warriors, coach Paul Murphy said, but against St. Charles East it should be back to business. At least he hopes breakdowns don't return to limit running back Tre Clark - who came into the Neuqua game averaging 5.8 yards a carry - to 28 yards on 12 carries, or which resulted in 2 Kenny Clay interceptions. Waubonsie's defense, led by Cory Connolly, Rickey Simpson, Owen Saldana and David Greenspan, who has forced 4 fumbles, recovered after Neuqua's initial burst. Their speed and quickness will be up against St. Charles East's bulk, and a goal is to wear out the Saints' several two-way players, including quarterback-linebacker Nolan Possley. "Don't turn it over and execute our blocks, play solid fundamental football," Murphy said. "We've got to get back to that."
