Gold medal gymnast coming to Stratford
Whether Chicago is toasting its host-city status for the 2016 Summer Olympics or nursing its bruised ego, suburban residents will have a reason to celebrate the games Saturday.
Shawn Johnson, an Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics and season eight winner of "Dancing With the Stars," will meet fans and sign autographs from 2 to 5 p.m. at Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale.
Organizers say Johnson's appearance is a great way to celebrate the excitement of the host city selection - no matter what the outcome.
"With all the Olympics excitement, what better way to enjoy it than to bring a gold medalist to the mall and give little girls and gymnasts an opportunity to see what they can be," said Nicole Woods, spokeswoman for Stratford Square.
Select mall retailers will sell Olympics memorabilia for Johnson to sign and photos of the gymnast also will be sold for autographs.
Johnson's appearance continues Stratford Square's efforts to attract celebrities. Several years ago, the mall played host to teen heartthrob singer Jesse McCartney, attracting about 10,000 young fans.
On Saturday, organizers say they expect a large turnout and will open the autograph line at 9:30 a.m. Wristbands will be distributed starting at 10 a.m. and will be required for a visit with Johnson.
"We're very excited," Woods said. "I think she'll serve as a great role model for the young people who come."
Mall officials have booked two more celebrity appearances: former Chicago Bear and NFL Hall of Fame member Dan Hampton will visit Nov. 21 during Santa's arrival and "American Idol" season seven singer Michael Johns will appear Dec. 12.
